2020 MOOC FINAL PROJECT

Healthy Habits, Primaria 1°

For my final project, I have chosen the topic “Healthy Habits”, a theme that is being taught in Natural Sciences for my first grade students. To present the project in an engaging way, I have used digital tools like a slideshow, in order to make the information animated, and a quiz that will measure the content acquisition and for collaborative review. I believe the group involvement through the quiz review will allow information to solidify and give the students a chance to elaborate on their own thoughts.

The objectives of this project are to enable students discriminate what is healthy and not, to understand the benefits and consequences of good and bad health choices, and allow them an opportunity to autonomously build a foundation for their own choices for their body and mind. They are instructed to be involved with the slideshow using symbols for “action”, “answer”, and “repeat”.

In the first part, I show the presentation of what is healthy versus unhealthy (described as “okay sometimes” as to not demonize foods), using habits that they may already have in their daily lives as first graders. I want to emphasize the balance between body and mind, how you need to care for both.

After showing the choices they can make, I describe the consequences of both good and bad habits. A video is shown to compare the decline and incline of daily habits. As a final activity, students have to complete a quiz created with ProProfs that involves questions they have to answer in multiple choice, filling in the blanks and saying if a statement is true or false. The target of this quiz is self-assessment and goal setting.

The duration of the lesson is during one class period of 45 minutes. The first activity is about 30 minutes, as there are open questions and a video in the slideshow. The second activity allows for 15 minutes of completion and group review.

My role as a language assistant is to lead collaborative discussion between students, teaching them key concepts of health habits, and encouraging their elaboration skills in English. The teacher and I will complement each other through exchanging our own healthy habits and experiences in English to the students, as well as highlighting good examples that students mention during the presentation. To respond to levels of achievement, the teacher and I would group students together in a way that combines levels that challenge each other during discussion, neither leaving a student out with a lower level, nor neglecting use of the skills of higher levels. For different learning styles, we would evaluate the needs of students beforehand and ensure that the presentation is tailored to all types: visual (using charts and videos), verbal (open questions for them to answer out loud), aural (elaborating on my own healthy habits), physical (a short break activity during the presentation), logical (getting them to ask questions with “what can this person do better”), social (group work), and solitary (allowing time to self-analyze during the quiz).
